The Villages of Light celebration is an annual event that takes place Thanksgiving weekend every year. The event brings the spirit of the holidays to the Twin Villages of Damariscotta and Newcastle and kicks off the Christmas season. Upward to 70 decorated Christmas trees line Main Street in the Twin Villages, and two 20-foot decorated Christmas trees bookend the towns. The bridge connecting the two towns is draped with garland and lights and wreaths are hung on poles throughout town. On Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, children gather in Skidompha Library to enjoy cookies and treats and make crafts to take home. Mid-day, Santa arrives at Lincoln Theater to listen to the children’s wishes which is followed by a free Christmas movie. The Parade of Lights begins around dark (4:30) and Santa & Mrs. Clause arrive in a horse-drawn sleigh followed by decorated floats, fire trucks, cars, dancers and elves, bringing the spirit of Christmas to the Twin Villages. After the parade, visitors enjoy a local meal in town or a festive holiday drink called “cup of cheer.” In Newcastle at Milling Around Antiques & Gifts a special holiday tradition welcomes you after dark. Jake Day, a beloved local artist, created enchanting carved dioramas depicting a variety of holiday scenes that is magical for the young and old alike. Come spark your spirit during this annual holiday celebration.
